چکیده

An attempt was made to detect interaction between photosynthesizing algae and denitrifying bacteria by cultivating Chlorella sp. with Pseudomonas s t u t d . Denitrification was inhibited by illumination of the mixed culture after a dark period of 3 hr. It is suggested that immediate inhibition is due to the molecular oxygen produced by the suspended algae and distributed homogeneously in the culture. A delay of this inhibition may be caused by uptake of oxygen by the denitrifiers at a more rapid rate than its production by the algae. Thus, the quantitative aspects of this interaction depend upon the particular conditions of cultivation used. The ecological implications are discussed.

Nitrogen fluxes, denitrification and the role of microphytobenthos in microtidal shallow-water sediments: an annual study

The annual cycle of oxygen and nitrogen flux, denitrification and microphytobenthic variables (primary production, biomass, composition and calculated N demand) were studied for 2 shallow-water microtidal sediment sites in NE Kattegat, 1 sandy and 1 silty, by incubating undisturbed sediment in the laboratory in light and darkness. Both sites (2 stations within each) were characterised by low co...

Oxygen Control and Improved Denitrification Efficiency by Means of a Post-Anoxic Reactor

The presence of dissolved oxygen (DO) in biological denitrification reactors determines inhibition effects on the denitrification rate. The article shows the results of an experimental study to control the DO concentration in the pre-denitrification stage by a post-anoxic reactor. The results demonstrate that the post-anoxic reactor is very effective in improving the nitrogen removal efficiency...

Application of anaerobic digestion products of municipal solid food wastes in treating wastewaters

Anaerobic digestion is the breakdown of biodegradable organic material by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen or in an oxygen-starved environment. This technology is superior to the landfilling and also the aerobic composting. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the effluent Volatile Fatty Acids from the anaerobic acidogenesis of the food waste can be used du to its high valu...

Seasonal variation in denitrification and dissolved nitrogen fluxes in intertidal sediments of the Tagus estuary, Portugal

Dissolved nitrogen fluxes and denitrification were studied during 1 yr in intertidal sediments of the Tagus estuary (Portugal). This study focused on the factors regulating both nitrogen fluxes across the sediment-water interface and denitrification, and on the effect of microphytobenthos activity in controlling nitrogen cycling in these areas. Sampling was performed monthly at 2 stations locat...

Nitrous oxide emission in low-oxygen simultaneous nitrification and denitrification process: sources and mechanisms.

This study attempts to elucidate the emission sources and mechanisms of nitrous oxide (N2O) during simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process under oxygen-limiting condition. The results indicated that N2O emitted during low-oxygen SND process was 0.8±0.1 mgN/gMLSS, accounting for 7.7% of the nitrogen input. This was much higher than the reported results from conventional nitr...
